Zusammenfassung:The "Sportaerzteverband Hessen e. V." (association of sports physicians in Hessia) was founded in 1949. First chairman was the physician for internal medicine Dr. Wilhelm Weber, Frankfurt/Main, who became general secretary of the "Deutsche Sportaerztebund" (association of sports physicians in the Federal Republic of Germany) in 1950. New first chairman became Prof. Schnell, Marburg (1927 - 1933 chairman of the "Deutscher Aerztebund zur Foerderung der Leibesuebungen" [German association of physicians for improving physical exercise]). Prof. Hans Grebe was first chairman of the "Sportaerzteverband Hessen" 1954 - 1974, in the period 1957 - 1961 he was president of the "Deutscher Sportaerztebund" as well. Prof. Grebe initiated the meanwhile 41(!) two weeks lasting winter education courses, performed since 1961. Prof. Grebe held as well sports medical seminars within the medical training courses of the "Bundesaerztekammer" (similar to "General Medical Council"), as early as in 1970 he supported the qualification term "sports medicine" for physicians at the "Landesaerztekammer Hessen" (regional professional body of physicians) and in 1953 he led the second congress for sports physicians after the second world war in Frankfurt/Main. 1974 - 1995 Prof. Dieter Boehmer was first chairman of the "Sportaerzteverband Hessen" (as well professor of sports medicine of the University Frankfurt/Main and head of the "Sportaerztliche Hauptberatungsstelle des Landes Hessen" [main center of Hessia for sportsmedical examinations and counselling]). In 1978 the "Sportaerzteverband Hessen" carried out the German congress for sports physicians in Bad Nauheim under the leadership of Prof. Boehmer and Prof Paul E. Nowacki (since 1972 holder of the new set up first chair of sports medicine in Hessia at the University Giessen). Since 1980 every year 2, later on 3 (and later 4) one week lasting training courses for physicians of the "Sportaerzteverband Hessen" were offered in Frankfurt/Main. In 1986 the office of the "Sportaerzteverband Hessen" was inaugurated. The number of members increased from approximately 700 at that time to approximately 1000. From 1995 till 2001 Dr. Alfred Hartmann was first chairman of the "Sportaerzteverband". Temporarily the "Sportaerzteverband Hessen" as 1 of 13 (later on 18) regional parts of the DGSP (German society for sports medicine and prevention) gave 4 of 6 chairmen of sections on national level (Dr. Hartmann [1981 - 2001 sports of children and adolesc
