Exhibition reviews : "Ivon Hitchins (1893-1979)"

Reviews an exhibition of works by 20th-century English painter Ivon Hitchins, titled "Ivon Hitchins (1893-1979)," which was on view at the Jonathan Clark Fine Art Gallery in London from 5 May-3 June 2016. The show, which ranged over three floors, presented a selection of works from the artist's estate and gallery stock. Some have not been shown since the 1930s and other paintings have never been publicly exhibited. Some canvases were kept meticulously rolled from the wartime years until only recently. The reds in particular of "Cottage interior, evening" (ca. 1938) were rich and unfaded. Hitchens preference for the double-and triple-square horizontal format is much in evidence here in the landscapes. [Revised Publication Abstract]
