The carbon cost of fine root turnover in a Scots pine forest

In this paper, we estimate fine root turnover and its carbon (C) cost in a 70-year-old Scots pine ( Pinus sylvestris L.) forest in the Belgian Campine region. Mean fine root biomass (to a soil depth of 0.9 m) was estimated as 400 g m −2. Annual production of fine roots in the organic horizon and upp...

Zusammenfassung:In this paper, we estimate fine root turnover and its carbon (C) cost in a 70-year-old Scots pine ( Pinus sylvestris L.) forest in the Belgian Campine region. Mean fine root biomass (to a soil depth of 0.9 m) was estimated as 400 g m −2. Annual production of fine roots in the organic horizon and upper 15 cm of the mineral soil was 210 g m −2 year −1. Turnover rates were 0.8 year −1 for roots
