Zusammenfassung: | Reading the right panel of the Franks Casket has confounded interpretation since its discovery. Recently Thomas Bredehoft has suggested the existence of an alternate r-rune which he reads as a cryptic rune fashioned out of the last letter of the runic names ur and yr, respectively. Based on the formula for the other cryptic runes as suggested by C. J. E. Ball, Bredehoft suggests new readings, namely haeum for haerm, Eutae for Ertae, and saeuden for saerden (2011). Although these new readings are intriguing, would like to suggest here that it need not alter the interpretation of runes, but rather reparse the letters of the first line. |
