Zusammenfassung:Potential determinants influencing an academic salary could include the type of services provided and the revenue generated for the department, funding sources and patient populations (e.g., county, private, federal), geographical location, included benefits, academic rank (e.g., instructor, assistant, associate, professor), additional fellowships and/or board certification, and the academic prestige of the university. Additional monetary compensation worth discussing with employers could include incentive-based pay, relocation costs, health and malpractice insurance, housing assistance in expensive markets, a sign-on bonus, educational stipends for conferences and materials, professional development opportunities such as having the department cover the cost of an additional degree, matched retirement plan contributions, or even the inclusion of a parking spot in a more expensive geographical region. Some academic institutions offer significant tuition reductions for both faculty and the children of faculty, which can amount to hundreds of thousands of dollars spread over multiple family members. Non-monetary points of negotiation may include entry/starting academic position and the criteria for promotion, sabbatical eligibility, and criteria protected academic time and the expectations that come with this, job responsibilities and expectations, teaching and research opportunities, availability of mentorship from senior faculty, and both the presence of and compensation for call duties.
