Zusammenfassung: | The old medieval Town Hall of Valencia was demolished between 1854 and 1860, taking five centuries of the citys history with it. Since then there have been several authors who have approached the building from the archive documents, focusing mainly on medieval times. However, its outer image that we know through old engravings and drawings was the result of a reconstruction carried out after the fire that destroyed its roofs on February 15, 1586. This article attempts to rescue the work carried out at that time from oblivion and the precise timing of what would be one of the most innovative façades of the late 16th century in Valencia, which can be paralleled to the College of Corpus Christi and the Professed House church. Possible references and models within the Hispanic context are also analyzed, as well as major changes undegone until the 19th century, summarized in a graphical reconstruction. The text is complemented by a documentary appendix in which two unpublished contracts related to woodworking and some minor works undertaken in 1597 are transcribed. [Publication abstract] |
