A Design History of Design: Complexity, Criticality, and Cultural Competence

The past four decades have seen the development of a significant debate concerning definitions of and approaches to teaching the history of design. In recent years, design history has shifted from a reliance on an art historical approach to a material culture approach. A material culture perspective provides appropriate methods and approaches to engage students in a discourse of criticality related to both design history and evolving design practice.
