Zusammenfassung: | The influence of bottom topography on the separation of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) in the Crozet Plateau region has been studied using an inertial jet model. A series of simulations with realistic velocity profiles of the current clearly shows that the northward separation of the subantarctic branch of the ACC is controlled by the regional bathymetry, in particular by the South-West Indian Ridge. A bottom velocity of 2 to 4 cm:s super(-) super(1) has been found to be necessary to reproduce this separation. |
