Purine metabolism is dysregulated in patients with major depressive disorder

Highlights • Decreased serum levels of inosine and guanosine were associated with depression. • Depressed patients also displayed increased serum levels of xanthine. • Purine metabolite alterations did not change during recovery from depression.
