Zusammenfassung:Attached bacterial growths are ubiquitous in aquatic systems and frequently are utilized to our advantage. The review is an attempt to point out the important role that slimes play in aquatic systems, both natural and man-made, and to indicate inconsistencies and contradictions in our knowledge concerning them. Further research is necessary to determine better control methods for nuisance growths and to determine techniques for utilizing attached growths to the fullest advantage.
