Methods and Results The Ps. aeruginosa strain PAO1 was selected as the test strain. The results indicated that quercetin did not impact the growth of PAO1 as determined by MIC and growth curve analysis. However, this compound significantly inhibited (P &lt; 0·05) biofilm formation and production of virulence factors including pyocyanin, protease and elastase at a lower concentration than those for most previously reported plant extracts and substances. Considering the central role of quorum sensing (QS) in the regulation of biofilm and virulence factor, we further detected the transcriptional changes associated with QS and found that the expression levels of lasI, lasR, rhlI and rhlR were significantly reduced (P &lt; 0·05) by 34, 68, 57 and 50%, respectively, in response to 16 μg ml−1 quercetin. Conclusions This study indicated that quercetin is an effective inhibitor of biofilm formation and virulence factors in Ps. aeruginosa. Significance and Impact of the Study This is the first study to demonstrate that quercetin is an effective inhibitor of QS, biofilm formation and virulence factors in Ps. aeruginosa. Furthermore, quercetin might have potential in fighting biofilm‐related infections.</description><identifier>ISSN: 1364-5072</identifier><identifier>EISSN: 1365-2672</identifier><identifier>DOI: 10.1111/jam.13073</identifier><identifier>PMID: 26808465</identifier><identifier>CODEN: JAMIFK</identifier><language>eng</language><publisher>England: Oxford University Press</publisher><subject>Bacteriology ; biofilm ; Biofilms ; Biofilms - drug effects ; Biofilms - growth &amp; development ; Microbiology ; Pseudomonas aeruginosa ; Pseudomonas aeruginosa - drug effects ; Pseudomonas aeruginosa - physiology ; quercetin ; Quercetin - pharmacology ; quorum sensing ; Quorum Sensing - drug effects ; Virology ; virulence factors ; Virulence Factors - analysis ; Virulence Factors - biosynthesis</subject><ispartof>Journal of applied microbiology, 2016-04, Vol.120 (4), p.966-974</ispartof><rights>2016 The Society for Applied Microbiology</rights><rights>2016 The Society for Applied Microbiology.</rights><rights>Copyright © 2016 The Society for Applied Microbiology</rights><lds50>peer_reviewed</lds50><oa>free_for_read</oa><woscitedreferencessubscribed>false</woscitedreferencessubscribed><citedby>FETCH-LOGICAL-c4873-b1a27dbffdd0702ff8c80a5ffbf3ba61aa0a9813aed1334f786c9801f17045d53</citedby><cites>FETCH-LOGICAL-c4873-b1a27dbffdd0702ff8c80a5ffbf3ba61aa0a9813aed1334f786c9801f17045d53</cites></display><links><openurl>$$Topenurl_article</openurl><openurlfulltext>$$Topenurlfull_article</openurlfulltext><thumbnail>$$Tsyndetics_thumb_exl</thumbnail><linktopdf>$$Uhttps://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/pdf/10.1111%2Fjam.13073$$EPDF$$P50$$Gwiley$$H</linktopdf><linktohtml>$$Uhttps://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1111%2Fjam.13073$$EHTML$$P50$$Gwiley$$H</linktohtml><link.rule.ids>314,776,780,1411,27903,27904,45553,45554</link.rule.ids><backlink>$$Uhttps://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/26808465$$D View this record in MEDLINE/PubMed$$Hfree_for_read</backlink></links><search><creatorcontrib>Ouyang, J.</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Sun, F.</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Feng, W.</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Sun, Y.</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Qiu, X.</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Xiong, L.</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Liu, Y.</creatorcontrib><creatorcontrib>Chen, Y.</creatorcontrib><title>Quercetin is an effective inhibitor of quorum sensing, biofilm formation and virulence factors in Pseudomonas aeruginosa</title><title>Journal of applied microbiology</title><addtitle>J Appl Microbiol</addtitle><description>Aims The study aimed to perform a systematic investigation of the effects of quercetin on biofilm formation and virulence factors in Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
