Female fetus may has an effect on increased miR-210 expression mediated by the NF-κB pathway and contribute to placental mitochondrial dysfunction. • Increased maternal HCG levels and female fetus are two independent risk factors in predicting subsequent SPE at 15–20 weeks of gestation.
