Zusammenfassung: | The golden galaxias fish, endemic to lakes Crescent and Sorell and their associated wetlands in Tasmania, Australia, is considered to be endangered. The morphology, distribution, abundance, habitat preferences, ecology, and reproductive habits of this fish are summarized. Two translocated populations were established in farm dams in the Clyde River catchment between 1996-98. Only four breeding populations now exist. Because spawning in this species is triggered by rising lake levels, the low water levels in the two lakes now are the main threat to breeding stocks. Competition and predation from introduced fish also are threats. Golden galaxias are protected by state law. A water management plan for the lakes where it is found has been developed that incorporates protective measures. All populations should continue to be monitored and water levels need to be managed for the health and survival of golden galaxias populations. |
