Zusammenfassung:	Highlights • The autonomic regulation of the heart in adults aged 40–100 years is parameterized. • Global autonomic regulation (GAR) decreases linearly with age. • Parasympathetic outflow (PO) presents a U-shaped curve with nadir in the 7th decade. • Women present lower GAR and a higher PO when compared to men of the same age. • Non-insulin-dependent diabetes decreases the GAR and the PO in both genders.
