The azo···phenyl stacking, preserved upon either chemical substitution or halogen-bonded cocrystallization, guides the assembly of fluorinated cis-azobenzenes into columnar stacks and drives the formation of crystals with needle-like morphologies optimal for photo-mechanical motion. |
