Protective effect of edaravone against manganese-induced toxicity in cultured rat astrocytes

Highlights • Manganese (Mn) may lead to acute and/or chronic toxicity in human and animals. • Edaravone (EDA) is clinically used for treatment of patients with acute cerebral injury. • We tested whether EDA has protective effect against Mn toxicity in astrocyte cultures. • Mn dose-dependently reduce...

Zusammenfassung:Highlights • Manganese (Mn) may lead to acute and/or chronic toxicity in human and animals. • Edaravone (EDA) is clinically used for treatment of patients with acute cerebral injury. • We tested whether EDA has protective effect against Mn toxicity in astrocyte cultures. • Mn dose-dependently reduced cell viability and increased lipid peroxides in astrocyte cultures. • Treatment of astrocytes with EDA suppressed oxidative stress and cell death due to Mn exposure.
