Zusammenfassung:Review of exhibition, 'Anthony McCall: Vertical Works', at Ambika P3, London, formerly installed at Spruth Magers, London, with McCall's 'Works on Paper'. 'Breath', 'Breath III', 'Meeting You Halfway' and 'You' are simply incredible sculptures in light that make visible Newton's observation about the nature of light - that it is not actually white but a mixture of colours where each shade corresponds to a particular wavelength. They unsettle and fascinate, and it's as engaging to see people interacting with the works as it is to observe the works themselves. They are an exercise in perception, revealing how complicated and imprecise the act of looking can be. Whereas artists such as James Turrell and Thierry Dreyfus use light to transform existing space, McCall uses it to create space, and the difference is remarkable and overwhelming.
