The antidepressant fluoxetine protects the hippocampus from brain damage in experimental pneumococcal meningitis

Highlights • We evaluated adjuvant fluoxetine treatment in an infant rat model of pneumococcal meningitis. • Less animals showed relevant hippocampal apoptosis when treated with fluoxetine. • Inflammatory parameters in the cerebrospinal fluid were not affected by fluoxetine treatment.
