Molecular epidemiology and molecular characterization of respiratory syncytial viruses at a tertiary care university hospital in Catalonia (Spain) during the 2013–2014 season

Highlights • The genetic variability of recent circulating HRSV strains in Catalonia (Spain) is described. • Both HRSV groups co-circulated during the 2013–14 season, but HRSV-B was predominant. • Different phylogenetic subgroups within ON-1 (HRSV-A) and BA9 (HRSV-B) were distinguished. • A strain c...

Zusammenfassung:Highlights • The genetic variability of recent circulating HRSV strains in Catalonia (Spain) is described. • Both HRSV groups co-circulated during the 2013–14 season, but HRSV-B was predominant. • Different phylogenetic subgroups within ON-1 (HRSV-A) and BA9 (HRSV-B) were distinguished. • A strain carrying a mutation related to Palivizumab resistance was found. • The present study highlights the importance of an active HRSV surveillance.
