Zusammenfassung: | Before the 2010 national survey on gambling, France had not taken on the task of quantifying the prevalence of gambling and problem gambling in the general population. This study presents, by way of analysis of the 2010 Barometre-Sante survey data set, a description of gambling habits and patterns in France. It examines the demographic profile of current players, the gambling practices of involved gamblers, that is, players who show a high engagement in gambling either in terms of frequency of participation in gambling activities or in the amounts of spending, as well as the associations between problem gambling and substance use. Participants reported on the frequency of participation to various gambling activities and spending, the assessment problem gambling severity (CPGI), and measures of consumption of psychoactive substances. The inclusion of a greater set of questions on gambling and other health practices will better our understanding of risk factors and vulnerabilities to problem gambling.
