Boryushin et al examine modern development trends in basic armor performance characteristics that have been spared by breakthroughs in information technologies, microelectronics, and automated control systems. The experience of wars fought in the recent past and prediction of what they might be in the future give a clear indication that, as ground troops are supplied with overwhelming quantities of high-precision weapons and reconnaissance and strike systems, the combined-arms engagement is evolving into a maneuverable, tense, and fast-moving action driven by the opponents' desire to take short cuts toward their objectives by hitting one another to the hill depth of their order of battle.
