The borders of modernity. The Tacnan-Arican space and the nationalization of the Chilean Great North (1883-1929)

// ABSTRACT IN ENGLISH: The paper recovers the modernity processes in the constitution of the Chilean borders. The northern Chilean territory is described regarding its borders and historical-social characteristics. The way the Pacific War contributed to the formation of the Chilean-Peruvian border (between the cities of Tacna and Arica) is debated, highlighting the politic of Chilenization of these spaces. The contradictions that this border poses to the modern definition of national space are discussed. // ABSTRACT IN SPANISH: El artículo recupera los procesos de modernidad en la constitución de la frontera norte de Chile. Se describe el territorio septentrional chileno definiendo sus características fronterizas e histórico-territoriales. Se aborda cómo la Guerra del Pacífico contribuyó a la formación de la frontera Chile-Perú entre las ciudades de Tacna y Arica, estipulando la política de chilenización de éstos espacios.
