Mechanism of phytotoxic action of naphthoquinone pigments of the fungus Fusarium decemcellulare

The naphthoquinone pigments of the fungus Fusarium decemcellulare (javanicin, fusarubin, anhydrofusarubin and bostricoidin) induced KCN-insensitive oxidation of NADH and NADPH by mitochondria, microsomes and cytosol of pea seedlings. The reduced pigments produced the superoxide radical (O 2 −) durin...

Zusammenfassung:The naphthoquinone pigments of the fungus Fusarium decemcellulare (javanicin, fusarubin, anhydrofusarubin and bostricoidin) induced KCN-insensitive oxidation of NADH and NADPH by mitochondria, microsomes and cytosol of pea seedlings. The reduced pigments produced the superoxide radical (O 2 −) during their autoxidation. The phytotoxic action of naphthoquinone pigments is suggested to be largely due to the toxicity of O 2 − and H 2O 2 and a decrease in the level of NAD(P)H in the cell
