Phenoxyacetates

Herbicidal phenoxyacetates include 2,4-D, 2,4,5-trichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4,5-T) and methylchlorophenoxyacetic acid (MCPA). Occupational exposure, usually via dermal contact, can result in skin and eye irritation. Ingestion of large amounts, as in suicide attempts, can result in muscular, cardiovascular, central nervous system, hepatic, and renal abnormalities. There may be some link between phenoxyacetate exposure and cancers of the soft tissue. A schedule for medical surveillance of the occupationally exposed is presented, as are first aid recommendations. Urinary measurements of specific compounds is recommended for biological monitoring of exposure.
