Zusammenfassung:The risk of ochratoxin A to human health was the subject of a recent meeting. Its toxicity was high-lighted in the 1970s when pigs in Denmark developed a nephropathy after eating mouldy feed containing ochratoxin A. Pig production is now handled in such a way as to limit ochratoxin A exposure by avoiding storing wet feed or reducing humidity where feeds will be stored for long periods. National programmes also assay ochratoxin A in feed, blood and meat, and contaminated material is condemned. Ochratoxin A causes proximal tubule necrosis and renal degeneration in all species (pig, dog, rat, rabbit, mouse, avians) tested. It is also teratogenic and immunosuppressive.
