New titanate matrices for immobilization of REE–actinide high-level waste

The phases with different structures formed in the series REE 2 Ti x Zr 2− x O 7 ( x  = 0–2) are considered as potential high-level waste (HLW) forms. Zusammenfassung:The phases with different structures formed in the series REE 2 Ti x Zr 2− x O 7 ( x  = 0–2) are considered as potential high-level waste (HLW) forms. Matrices were synthesized by cold pressing and sintering. The ceramics were studied by XRD, SEM/EDS, TEM, XAFS. The sample based on monoclinic REE 2 Ti 2 O 7 was irradiated by Kr 2+ (1 MeV). The appearance of the additional monoclinic compound to pyrochlore is observed in the samples at x  > 0.8. The monoclinic REE 2 Ti 2 O 7 is characterized by high isomorphic capacity with respect to REEs. Its radiation resistance is close to Ti-pyrochlores. Monoclinic REE titanate requires further examination as potential host phase for HLW immobilization.
