TEM ANALYSIS OF NANOCRYSTALLINE SiC CERAMICS SINTERED BY SPS USING Al2O3-TiO2 ADDITIVE

Nanocrystalline SiC ceramics were fabricated by spark plasma sintering (SPS) using Al2O3 and TiO2 additives, with the composition of 5, 10 and 20 wt% (Al2O3-TiO2). XRD revealed formation of a TiC phase. Mullite phase with preferred orientation was also detected in SiC with 20 wt% addition. TEM and E...

Zusammenfassung:Nanocrystalline SiC ceramics were fabricated by spark plasma sintering (SPS) using Al2O3 and TiO2 additives, with the composition of 5, 10 and 20 wt% (Al2O3-TiO2). XRD revealed formation of a TiC phase. Mullite phase with preferred orientation was also detected in SiC with 20 wt% addition. TEM and EDS identified TiC, aluminosilicate glass and mullite crystal phases. Segregation of titanium atoms in addition to aluminium and oxygen atoms was seen at the intergranular glassy phase with a thickness of 1-2 nm. The electrical conductivity was similar to Al2O3 single addition to SiC ceramics.
