Zusammenfassung:	Data are presented in the BOD and COD of the water and the concentrations of metals and pesticides in the Sarno river and the Volturno river, in the Campania region of Italy. The toxicity of the sediments was assayed, using the fertilization and embryo development in sea urchin eggs. There was good agreement between the chemical data and the bio-assay results. The Sarno river, which flowed through a densely populated area, was more polluted than the Volturno river, and its sediments were toxic in the bio-assay.
