YERSINIA ENTEROCOLITICA SEPTICEMIA IN A RENAL TRANSPLANT RECIPIENT ON ORAL IRON SUPPLEMENTATION

Septicemia due to Yersinia enterocolitica is not frequent and occurs primarily in patients whose host defense is compromised by underlying disease or immunosuppressive therapy. Most cases reported so far have concerned patients suffering from diseases associated with an iron-overloaded state or treated deferoxiamine. Transplant patients are potentially at increased risk of infection-however, few cases of septicemia have been reported. We report here a case of septicemia due to Y. enterocolitica in a renal transplant recipient on oral iron supplementation.
