Zusammenfassung:The role of bacteria in sediments and their interaction with the water column is discussed. The problems of estimating bacterial biomass and some of the more recent developments in ways of studying substrate transformations in the laboratory are considered under conditions simulating the nutrient status occurring in nature. The conditions in the sediment environment that influenced microbial activities are outlined.
