Zusammenfassung:Broccoli growers in Monterey County, California, were queried about their use of pesticides targeted for regulatory restriction and the feasibility of alternatives to the pesticides as suggested by a data base developed by University of California crop protection specialists. Results showed that only a minority of growers were using most targeted materials and many were already using suggested alternatives. An important exception was the use of 1,3-dichloropropene for the control of nematodes, which had been used by 43.2% of the growers before its withdrawal by the manufacturer in April 1990. In most cases, growers were unable to suggest major alternatives to targeted pesticides not already suggested by the data base. Most alternatives currently being used by growers are other pesticides. If all pesticides were eliminated, only the management of weeds and possibly downy mildew could be satisfactorily accomplished with current technology. However, growers expressed interest in adopting nonchemical alternatives if efficacy could be demonstrated. The study did not consider potential environmental or health impacts of alternatives.
