Transatlantic misunderstanding: the American perception of French secularism

// ABSTRACT IN ENGLISH: This articles analyzes the American discourse on French secularism and shows how the latter, often considered too 'radical' in the United States, has historically functioned as a counter-model to the American ideal of church/state separation. At the beginning of the 21st century, the dominant representations of French secularism in the United States also contribute to highlight the characteristics and ambiguities of the US approach to church/state relations. // ABSTRACT IN FRENCH: Cet article analyse le discours américain sur la laïcité française et montre comment cette dernière, souvent jugée trop «radicale» outre-Atlantique, a historiquement fonctionné comme un contre-modèle à l'idéal américain de la séparation Église/État. Au début du XXIe siècle, les représentations dominantes de la laïcité française aux États-Unis reflètent aussi, en miroir, les spécificités et les ambiguïtés de l'approche américaine de gestion du religieux.
