Zusammenfassung:•The thermal cracks of tungsten in different orientation were investigated.•The rolled tungsten bulk exhibited anisotropic bending strength.•Type B sample showed higher cracking threshold than that of type A sample.•Primary cracks appeared with linear profile for type A while circular for type B.•For both type samples, dominant intergranular cracks were observed by EBSD. Thermal shock resistance of rolled tungsten with elongated grains aligned parallel and perpendicular to the loading direction was examined. Parallel (type A) or perpendicular (type B) grain orientations influences crack characteristics including threshold, profile, pattern and parameter. Type B samples show a cracking threshold of 0.44–0.66GW/m2, which is much higher than type A samples (
