Evaluation of rolled (Prego) bract cottons for tarnished plant bug and boll weevil resistance

Arkansas Frego No. 25 and Louisiana Frego No. 560, both rolled bract cottons, were compared with three "normal bract" cottons, Ark-Yugo No. 4, Stoneville 213 and Stoneville 825, for resistance to the tarnished plant bug, Lygus lineolaris (palisot de Beauvois) and the boll weevil Anthonomus grandis grandis Boheman. Breeding efforts at plant bug resistance in Arkansas Frego No. 25 and Louisiana Frego No. 560 did not appear to alter boll weevil resistance as reported for the original Frego bract. However, the Frego cottons sustained significantly higher levels of square injury by tarnished plant bug than normal bract cottons. Sequential harvests indicated a significant maturity advance in Arkansas Frego No. 25, comparable to the early maturity of Ark-Yugo No. 4.
