Zusammenfassung:	The merits of algae as environmental indicators based on listed commonly accepted criteria for indicator selection are reviewed. The efficacy of different types of algal indicators for monitoring ecosystem change are compared. Based on the available evidence from field studies, the development of taxonomic indicators based on diatoms (Bacillariophyceae) as a standardized protocol for monitoring ecosystem change is recommended.
