Zusammenfassung:The importance of India's 3150 km2 of mangroves, 80 per cent in the north-east, is discussed. They are exploited for wood, fish, fruit, salt production and natural medicines. Their survival depends on large scale re-afforestation supported by education to emphasize their importance. With care, agriculture, fisheries and tourism could be supported by these areas without their suffering further deterioration. Their distribution among the coastal states and the species of flora and fauna they support are described.
