Rapid measurement of toxicity using electrochromic dyes and frog embryos

Results are reported from studies on a 30 minute bioassay based on the use of a fluorescent dye (di-4-Anepps) to measure changes in the membrane potential across a cell, using blastula-stage embryos of the South African clawed frog (Xenopus laevis), with 6-aminonicotinamide as the toxicant. Zusammenfassung:Results are reported from studies on a 30 minute bioassay based on the use of a fluorescent dye (di-4-Anepps) to measure changes in the membrane potential across a cell, using blastula-stage embryos of the South African clawed frog (Xenopus laevis), with 6-aminonicotinamide as the toxicant. From the results, membrane-potential EC50 was predictive of the lethal effects of the toxicant rather than of its teratogenic (malformation effects).
