Innate recognition of song in white-crowned sparrows: a role in selective vocal learning?

Here we present the results of a new assay using tape-playback of songs, which demonstrate that very young hand-reared white-crowned sparrows, Zonotrichia leucophrys nuttalli , recognize conspecific song solely by acoustic cues, prior to the onset of song production.
