Structure and function of the buccal apparatus of Clione limacina (Phipps) with a review of feeding in gymnosomatous pteropods

Zusammenfassung:Feeding experiments and gut content analyses indicate that the gymnosomatous pteropod mollusc, Clione limacina (Phipps), feeds only on the thecosomatous pteropod genus Spiratella (Limacina) both in nature and the laboratory. Feeding is effected by complete extraction of the prey from its shell. The structure and function of the specialized buccal mass of Clione is described, as well as the action of associated musculature and the functional role of the hemocoel. Related aspects of the feeding biology of Clione are discussed, including escape responses of the prey, mechanical specializations of the predator, and problems associated with feeding specialization. Food and feeding biology of other gymnosomes is reviewed and compared with the results of this study.
