Zusammenfassung: | Eight lagoon ecosystems in Albania, covering 10 900 ha, are described. All lagoons have been subjected to many hydrological modifications and drainage work, generally resulting in deleterious effects on their function and productivity. The average total yield of fisheries operating in these lagoons was 48–77 kg ha
−1 year
−1 from 1986 to 1990. Grey mullet (
Mugil spp.), eels (
Anguilla anguilla L.), sea bass (
Dicentrachus labrax L.) and crabs (
Carcinus aestuarii Nardo) account for almost all of the catch. All these lagoon systems are more or less threatened in the long term by sedimentation, siltation of the channels connecting them to the sea, episodes of hypertrophic anoxia, and domestic and industrial pollution. Integrated management plans, also covering the catchment areas, could help to maintain proper functioning and promote sustainable development of these ecosystems. |
