Zusammenfassung: | Repeated statements that there have been reports of clusters of childhood leukemia around nuclear plants in Britain seem incongruous. The reports in question have been evaluated carefully by the independent committee set up to investigate the first report of a cluster in the village of Seascale in West Cumbria (the Black Committee), by the Committee on Medical Aspects of Radiation in the Environment (COMARE) on three occasions, as well as by individual authors. However, these evaluations appear not to have received the attention they deserve. The fact that there have been reports of clusters seems to have made more impression on the scientific and lay public than has the question of whether there is any substance to them. The author offers a perspective gained in reviewing these reports in a legal context. |
