Clean water: Factors that influence Its availability, quality and its use: Summary of the International Water Conference

An overview of conference proceedings relating to the use of water by electric utilities is given. The regulatory background in U.S.A. is explained. Ecological and health risks, control strategies, the measurement of water quality, and water resource modelling, are discussed. Recent trends include: decision-making by consensus at local level rather than by federal government imposition; integrated approaches; the use of risk analysis; the use of reclaimed water for power plant cooling; and the development of more sophisticated integrated modelling systems using knowledge from a range of scientific disciplines.
