Zusammenfassung:	A simple procedure is presented for estimating the tidal exchange flux, the gravitational circulation flux, and the Hansen-Rattray parameter, ν, for an estuary. The quantities needed for this determination are freshwater inputs to the estuary at various times during the year and the corresponding values of the average salinity within the estuary and the salinity within the adjacent ocean reservoir. The formulation is applied to data from Narragansett bay.
