Observations on the breeding and development of some sharks

Size at maturity, developmental stages and breeding seasons of five sharks from the Porto Novo coast (Tamil Nadu, India) are described. A maximum of 20 embryos with an average of 12 embryos of Sphyrna blochii have been collected. The relationship between the number of embryos and the total length of the mothers was also calculated. The other sharks studied for their breeding habits were S. lewini, Rhizoprionodon acutus, Carcharhinus limbatus and C. sorrah . All these have a developed placental system for nourishing their developing embryos in the uterus.
