An outdoor mesocosm study to assess ecotoxicological effects of atrazine on a natural plankton community

The effects of the triazine herbicide atrazine (2-chloro-4-ethylamino-6-isopropylamino-s-triazine) on a natural plankton community were assessed using pond mesocosms. Atrazine was applied at 6 test concentrations during a 6 week study. Structural and functional parameters were measured twice weekly....

Zusammenfassung:The effects of the triazine herbicide atrazine (2-chloro-4-ethylamino-6-isopropylamino-s-triazine) on a natural plankton community were assessed using pond mesocosms. Atrazine was applied at 6 test concentrations during a 6 week study. Structural and functional parameters were measured twice weekly. Marked reductions in oxygen levels indicated adverse effects by atrazine on photosynthesis. Sensitivity to atrazine varied among phytoplankton taxa, though at 182 ug per litre threshold concentrations for effects on most taxa were exceeded. The most probable causes of changes in the abundance of several zooplankton species were indirect effects due to food limitation.
