Zusammenfassung: | The family Anatidae is one of eleven families of birds that shed flight feathers simultaneously. There are only a few exceptions to the pattern of one simultaneous wing molt per plumage cycle in Anatidae; all but one of the exceptions (ruddy duck, Oxyura jamaicensis) involve species distributed in the Southern Hemisphere. Here I review published and unpublished information on double wing molt in ruddy ducks and offer speculation regarding its prevalence in free-living ruddy ducks in North America. |
