Status signalling in dark-eyed juncos, Junco hyemalis: plumage manipulations and hormonal correlates of dominance

Plumage variability in dark-eyed juncos is examined. Evidence indicates that plumage characteristics may influence an individual's relative status within a group if the characteristics are correlated with factors that may more directly affect dominance relationships.
