Environmental contaminants and cholinesterase activity in the brain of fisher (Martes pennanti) harvested in Northern Wisconsin

Zusammenfassung: | The fisher (Martes pennanti) is a member of Mustelidae and is a game species trapped in Wisconsin, U.S.A. Fourteen fisher brains were analysed for total mercury, cholinesterase activity, 12 organochlorine compounds, and 19 PCB congeners. Total mercury concentrations in brain tissues were 100-600 ppb. Mean cholinesterase activity was 5.68 umoles per g.minute. Of the organochlorine compounds studied, only heptachlor and lindane were detected but no significant bioaccumulation trends were apparent. Three principal PCB congeners were detected in fisher brain tissue: PCB 28, 49 and 153. |
