Bipolaris israeli sp. nov. from Israel: description and physiological features

A taxonomic description and some metabolic features of Bipolaris israeli sp. nov. are provided. This species was isolated from a soil sample of the Dead Sea area (Israel). The main cultural characteristics of this species are described and compared with those of two strains of the most closely related species, Bipolaris zeicola (Stout) Shoemaker. Physiological properties are compared with those of nine other Bipolaris strains. B. israeli exhibited various interesting properties among which the production of an efficient antimicrobial compound and a polysaccharide and also the ability to develop on various xenobiotics.
