Cyclopentyl and ω-5 monounsaturated fatty acids from red algae of the Solieriaceae

Detailed fatty acid analyses are reported for Agardhiella tenera, Anatheca montagnei, Euchema cottonii, E. spinosum and Meristotheca senegalensis. Capillary GC and GC-MS data revealed the presence of four unusual compounds: the cyclopentyl fatty acids dihydrohydnocarpic and dihydrochaulmoogric and the two monounsaturated fatty acids C16:1ω5 and C18:1ω5. The co-occurrence in large amounts of these four compounds among living organisms provide an interesting chemotaxonomic feature of the Solieriaceae.
